Helpful Hints for Landing Pages that Convert

Many internet marketers don’t have much interest in copywriting, yet this is something that can help your business immensely if you know the basics. Even if you never sell your services as a copywriter, you can apply many of the principles on your own websites, emails, landing pages, etc. Many marketers, for example, must write landing pages at one time or another, and this is an area that definitely makes use of copywriting skills. Copywriting skills are also relevant when you write emails, pay-per-click ads, and even blog posts. There are many places you can go to learn more about copywriting, though you should be certain that it’s being taught by someone with real authority in this field.

Most of the call to action based copy online is straightforward, compelling and gets right to the point. It’s important to test calls to action that isn’t as direct or as compelling.

There are a lot of people who no longer appreciate being commanded to do something, right now. So then a more amenable way of calling them to action can be with something using a word like, trying or learning more, etc. “Download” or “Download Now!” can turn people off, but “Learn More” accomplishes the same goal and is less in your face. Just remember to avoid using words that might be confusing or overly vague. Think more about the graphics you use for your buttons on your landing page. Obviously you are going to want them to stand out and be noticed–it helps to reinforce the action you’re trying to get them to take. For example, test out using buttons that are not the usual shapes, sizes or colors. Always test everything you do in this regard, and you can use the A/B split test method for that. You know that, in terms of real estate, location is incredibly important–the same thing matters for web pages. It is important to note, however, that most buttons and opt-in and lead generation forms are on the right hand sides of the pages.

Consider how you read web pages -you’re far more likely to scan a page for points of interest than you are to absorb every single word on the page. That is all right because that is what just about everybody does, and that fact is supported with research. So, do not interfere with the ability of your visitors to quickly, and easily, skim and scan your landing page copy. Disregard this advice at your own peril, as your visitors may leave your page without even knowing why it didn’t appeal to them. If you want to be sure that your landing page measures up in this way, we have two words you should memorize -”white space.” If you have (few) paragraphs, then do not make them more than about four sentences. Totally avoid long compound sentences that are good but not appropriate for the setting.

The most important thing that you need to realize is that you don’t just need to know about landing pages when you work in marketing. It is very important and helpful to be able to figure out why certain things are used at certain times and in certain ways. Because if that knowledge is not there, you aren’t going to know whether you’re just wasting your time and spinning your wheels.
